The funding is allotted under infrastructure legislation.
The Department of the Interior announced guidance for states, offering up to $30 million in matching grant funds under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to clean up orphaned oil and gas wells nationwide. The Orphaned Wells Program Office established by this law has already supported job creation and contributed upwards of $900 million to communities across the country.
“The Department of the Interior is moving quickly to implement this once-in-a-generation investment in tackling legacy pollution, provided through President Biden’s Investing in America agenda. These investments are good for our climate, for the health of our communities, and for American workers,” said Secretary Deb Haaland.
